Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu (ANTARA) – The Rejang Lebong Kuda Kepang Cultural Arts Association (PKKKRL) will host the Gerebeg Suro festival in Bengkulu on July 7 to mark the Islamic New Year, featuring a large-scale performance of kuda kepang.

Kuda kepang is a traditional Javanese dance in which performers ride flat, woven bamboo horses, often as part of ritual or cultural celebrations.

PKKKRL chairman Hidayatullah said on Wednesday that Gerebeg Suro is more than just a celebration of the Islamic New Year.

“It is a time to reflect on Islamic and cultural values, while also strengthening social bonds through traditional Islamic performances,” he said.

He noted that Gerebeg Suro has been held annually since 2022. The event aims to foster appreciation for local culture among younger generations and serve as a platform for cultural education.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, Hidayatullah said the organizing committee has coordinated with the Rejang Lebong Police to secure the area, as the celebration will involve dozens of kuda kepang groups from both the region and beyond.

“We greatly appreciate the support of the Rejang Lebong Police and their team in helping ensure the event runs safely and orderly. The presence of security forces is essential to the success of this annual cultural celebration,” he added.

Rejang Lebong Police Chief AKBP Florentus Situngkir expressed his support for the initiative and affirmed the police department’s full commitment to the event.

“This tradition does not belong to the arts community alone — it belongs to all of us. Gerebeg Suro must continue to thrive as a legacy that strengthens harmony within the community,” Situngkir said.
